I love that 70s hifi look, the analog VU meters and the fact it has MiniDisc. Sadly $350 broken on eBay and up from there. Video of meters in action below.

Song playing on the MiniDisc is a remix of Gladys Knight and the Pips by Dave Lee:

Wow that is cool AF. Growing up my  dad’s Panasonic stereo receiver (house edition ) looked almost identical to that.

Ok, this just blew my mind a bit. 70s hifi design on a minidisc  player? That’s wonderful! I want one! Too bad my budget for vintage audio equipment with an even more vintage design is currently $0.

Damn. I still have a minidisc player/ recorder in the bottom of a desk drawer . I bought it in grad school to record recitals etc. Haven’t touched it in years.

They are a thing all of a sudden it seems, apparently hipsters have discovered them.

Back before all the stereo gear went black and digital. A buddy had a gorgeous Pioneer receiver/amp that had the analog tuning dial with the huge knob you could spin across the dial, big switches, all the tactile goodness of those old sets. I miss ‘em.

I didn’t know I needed this until just now... wow!

This looks incredible. I think someone (more talented and creative than I) could come up with a really cool vintage interior theme around this in the right car.

Maybe I should try to get a few bucks for mine. God knows I’ll never use it again.

That price is nuts.

But I love it. I love the Silver Age; bicycle components, audio. Anything else come in silver? Car wheels.

When I discovered eBay, I went nuts buying this stuff until I realized I had an eBay problem . So now I have a pile in my basement :

They came in black as well which would be great for 80s and 90s cars, but they’re even rarer - there’s a couple on Yahoo Auctions Japan - $2,000 :

Knobs are solid machined aluminum (over a small plastic insert ) and so nice to handle . Your minidisc knobs, unfortunately, kinda look like chromed plastic.

I’m probably your dad’s age. I had a Pioneer SX-780 receiver in the late 70's. Going nuts on eBay was trying to fill some psychological void, I think.

I suspect you’re right, but right now this is Schroedinger’s stereo - I can’t afford it, therefore the knobs are both machined aluminum and cheap chromed plastic.

At that age of equipment, yes.  It’s as much time capsule as electronics.  If I end up with my dad’s set, I’ll never sell it.

You just blew my mind again... I had no idea Yahoo! auctions still existed!!!

I’m starting to get really serious about a project car this summer. What I’m planning is a 240 w agon, motor swap, redo the suspension and brakes, good wheels and tires, make a nice GT car out of it. And part of that is also having a nice stereo. B ut I want it to look good, and cohesive, so I’m going for that 80's to early 90's euro vibe and something like that would be perfect. Guess I need to throw another grand on the budget...

I have my console stereo that I picked up from a (now ex) BIL years ago that I finally got home last year but I don’t have anything with the metal + meters look that I envied so much when I was a kid. By the time I was buying stereo equipment everything was black except maybe some high end rackmount stuff.

I still have that. EQ is useless without the funky proprietary cord it came with. But I’m sure the amp and tuner still work. I don’t have the wooden rack any more, but it looked better stacked anyway.

There are some really good looking stock radios for the Volvos but I think the 240s may not have got them until the end...  might be able to fit something from a 740/760.

If going aftermarket, a vintage 1980s Blaupunkt would look great too and won’t break the bank.

yeah the old stuff holds up pretty well, you can generally find them at goodwill in good shape, in the worst case they need a few capacitors and bulbs

Kinja'd!!! Snuze: Needs another Swede > someassemblyrequired

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, I need to give it some more thought, the stereo and interior stuff hasn’t been as high on my priority list as the engine swap I have planned and supporting suspension and drivetrain mods.

The thing is, if I’m making it a nice GT car for myself, I want some modern conveniences, i.e. Android Auto. At the same time I’m loathe to hack the thing up and stuff a big screen smack in the middle of the dash. This one’s definitely going to take some more thought and there will definitely be some compromise along the way.

But if I keep it strictly old school, an 80's Blaupunkt would be sweet.

There was an add on cassette holder - I wonder if you could 3D print the surface of the cassette holder (which would be straighforward), and then put a single DIN slide out screen in behind - then spring load the 3D printed cover so it opens/closes when the screen slides out .

yeah 80s car audio decks have gotten crazy, I’d imagine there’s still some deals to be had every once in a while... this is my go to for 80s cars, especially with amber backlights (I’m assuming you have a C4):

Kinja'd!!!

$100-$150 most of the time, USB/AUX/Bluetooth, though I think most C4's are 1.5DIN, so you’ll still need a bracket.

I really want to keep a working tape deck though. I would use mine if it was working. Yeah C4s are 1.5 and I wouldn’t mind having a pocket there. The thing with the Blaupunkts are they are very easy to add BT or a cable to.

Kinja'd!!! someassemblyrequired > CaptDale - is secretly British
03/12/2020 at 23:59

Ah yeah, can totally understand that. The Blaupunkts were pretty spendy in the 80s, so you can still tell yourself you’re getting a deal - even at $2-300... :D
